Pousette Dart’s layered superimposed shapes create a complex self-portrait that Doring’s painting transforms with humor, bringing this image from the past back and giving it new life. The overexposed face of a female study, evoked now by Doring in thick oils, puts the study in conversation with Edvard Munch’s “Love and Angst” depicting the female form appearing and disappearing.
