“Friends of Richard Pousette-Dart”

Tönnheim Gallery proudly presents the New York based Mexican artist Claudia Doring Baez (she is represented, among others, at the prestigious Museum Reina Sofia in Madrid and Bronx Museum of Art in Bronx/NYC) and her celebrated exhibition “Friends of Richard Pousette-Dart”. Vernissage is open for all and everyone on Saturday the 25th of January between 11.00-14.30h.

A tribute to the Photographic work of Richard Pousette-Dart.

The American artist Claudia Doring Baez unveils a new series of paintings in her latest solo exhibition entitled, "Pousette-Dart: Friends & Flowers," .The new series is a vibrant reinterpretation of Richard Pousette-Dart's black and white photographic portraits of friends, family and artist colleagues. A pioneer in abstract expressionism, Pousette-Dart was recognized for his groundbreaking techniques like drip painting, inspiring artists like Jackson Pollock. A multifaceted American artist, Pousette-Dart not only excelled in painting but also ventured into photography, poetry, and music. His unique approach to photography viewed the medium as a powerful tool for reshaping the visual world.

In "Pousette-Dart: Friends & Flowers," Claudia Doring Baez breathes new life into Pousette-Dart's historical black and white portraits, infusing them with contemporary vibrancy through bold and colorful oil paintings. Her work engages in a dynamic dialogue between past and present, through an exploration of paint, color, and composition. Doring Baez's imaginative journey reinterprets the past, allowing her to live vicariously through art history and pay homage to the early expressionists. Pousette-Dart's nature studies serve as a rich source of inspiration for Doring Baez's expressive abstractions, allowing her to explore the boundaries of still-life and portraiture. This vibrant dialogue transcends the constraints of time and place, connecting nature and history with modernity in a captivating visual narrative.

Writer and Director, Alexandra Zelman-Doring beautifully encapsulates Doring Baez's creative process, stating, "If photography for Pousette-Dart was “a vehicle for palpably refashioning the visual matter of the world,” painting for Doring Baez refashions photographic matter through a brave and spiritual investigation of light, color and form. Pousette Dart’s layered superimposed shapes create a complex self-portrait that Doring Baez’s painting transforms with humor, bringing this image from the past back and giving it new life. The overexposed face of a female study, evoked now by Doring Baez in thick oils, puts the study in conversation with Edvard Munch’s “Love and Angst” depicting the female form appearing and disappearing. Pousette Dart’s nature studies give Doring Baez a way of coming close to nature in a yet more meaningful way: framed through his lens, the dramatically exposed flowers become subjects infused with life and dramatic intensity, prominent players on an ever-shifting stage."

Claudia Doring Baez (American, b. 1960 in Mexico City, lives and works in NYC)

Claudia Doring Baez’s paintings are animated by a reverence for art history, rendered in a contemporary, expressionistic vocabulary.  Baez engages in conversations with the work of some of the great artists from the past as  she selects, re-creates, and adopts details from images.  Her paintings are steeped with references from art and literature, ranging from German Expressionism to Marcel Proust, Brassaï, the rich renditions of Titian to abstracted versions of the work of Fra Angelico and Johannes Vermeer along with inspirations of contemporary artists such as Cindy Sherman.  Through her paintings she offers the viewer a new way to see the art history and personal histories.

Claudia Doring Baez exhibits internationally  in NYC, Miami,  Mexico City, Spain, Switzerland, and her work can be seen in publications including Art News Magazine.
